Commentary On Elections-Part Forty-Two And Part Forty-Three

Commentary On Elections-Part Forty-Two

The Choosing Of Federal Senators In Government Mode:
1. Imperial Democratic Mode- The President and/or federal legislative bodies (Senate and/or House of Representatives) chooses the members of the U.S. Senate. This will lead to tyranny as the legitimate purpose of these officeholders will be obscured and deviated. The direct conflicts of interests would be obvious due to their direct interactions.
2. direct democratic Mode- The people choose the members of the U.S. Senate via direct popular vote. This will lead to tyranny as the legitimate purpose of these officeholders will be obscured and deviated. Many if not most voters do not even know what the actual legitimate duties of a U.S. Senator are supposed to be.

The Choosing Of Federal Senators In Government Mode:
Representative Democratic Mode- There are actually three methods for this.
1. As already been cited, electoral votes should used by the People (general electorate) to choose these positions. However is this such a good idea since the U.S. Senator serves the nation and not the people in any specific state?
2. Electors could be used. Obviously these electors could only choose the U.S. Senator who is about to stand election. However while using one-off voting system works in choosing the federal head executives who serve the entire nation, will that work in choosing a federal upper house legislator?
The members of the U.S. Senate are supposed to respect the views of his/her constituents in his/her state by serving the basic needs of the nation as stipulated by the U.S. Constitution. While the federal head executives are not supposed to be influenced by the views of their constituents (the entire nation), a member of the U.S. Senate is supposed to take into account the views of his/her state's constituents.
3. Perhaps state legislators could be used to choose the members of the U.S. Senate. This is what the original American Constitution stipulated. While the nation's governance has changed in that the citizens are first and foremost citizens of the United States and not the state in which they live, this measure could actually work for different reasons.
There are times in which the same solution can be applied to different scenarios and it works even if it is for a different reason.
Since the states are subordinates to the nation, state legislatures may be better suited to choose their superiors in the U.S. Senate.
The members of the state legislatures have no contact with the U.S. Senate so the conflicts of interests would not exist. At the same time, a state legislator should understand the genuine role of an U.S. Senator much better than an average voter.
Finally a state legislator can be held accountable if he/she votes for a bad candidate for U.S. Senate by losing his/her office at the time of next elections. An elector cannot be held accountable for his/her choice since he/she have no constituents to answer. While the elector system works in choosing the POTUS and VPOTUS because they do not have to answer to the electorate, it would not work in the choosing of the members of the U.S. Senate because the people who choose these members have to answer to the People. A U.S. Senator must consider the views of his/her constituents in making the law while the head executives of the federal government should not in presiding over the administration of the law with cold, hard objectivity.
The state legislatures must pick the members of the U.S. Senate so that accountability can be emphasized. The choosing of U.S. Senators must be more of a competent one than a popular one. It must definitely be more so than the choosing of federal lower house legislators. U.S. Senators serve longer terms than even the President and Vice-President for the preceding reason only.
People should rather have a competent auto-mechanic who is not involved in any conflict of interests to work on their cars than themselves work on their car on their own. If that auto-mechanic commits incompetence, people can hold that individual accountable. If the people commit incompetence, then the people will not able to blame anyone else. Since the job of U.S. Senator requires good acumen, good judgement, and knowledge of foreign affairs, people should rather have competent state legislators decide who the U.S. Senators should be rather than their fellow voters take such decisions.
