Slowing The Rate Of Deterioration, Caused By A Defective Legal System, Is The First Step Of Progress

Dear Fellow American, October 1995

This nation is headed for disaster if it continues to go the route it is currently going, plain and simple. Certain things have got to change before the situation becomes less bleak. Adjusted for inflation, hourly wages have actually gone down since 1956. Despite the government figures, the economy has actually contracted, and not grown, if Gross Domestic Product is based on actual tax returns. The standard of living is falling for nearly two-thirds of all Americans. The total tax rate is now 47% of all income.

In Hong Kong, a nation in which free enterprise transformed it from one of utter poverty to that of the highest state of development, its total tax rate is 12%. In fact, that nation now experiences a budget surplus and more importantly, many of its middle class have as much as five to ten million dollars for investments. The gap between rich and poor is widening. The ladder of empowerment is now much more difficult to climb, especially for the people trapped in poverty. Regulation and red tape now costs each person in America $2,000 each. This figure does not even include the costs of litigation to "interpret" the laws and regulations.

The United States has now more prisoners per capita and more prisoners period that any other nation on the planet except Russia. Yet, the prison building industry is the fastest growing of all industries.

The federal government alone has amassed a debt of $4.5 trillion. However, the real debt is a staggering $13 trillion more that is not accounted for officially. The $13 trillion debt, which technically does not exist,is for unfunded pension obligations (military, government employee, and social security).

While the list of reasons for pessimism if the current trend continues is lengthy, it all can be attributed to one cause, our defective legal system. It has enabled the ruling class to seize more power and income at the expense of the productive, hard-working worker. The goals of the ruling class are at many times in conflict with those of people who create jobs and wealth. Moreover, the politicians, lawyers, bureaucrats, regulators, and religious leaders do not deliver the jobs and increased incomes. The nations which are growing have done so because they have diminished the role of the ruling class significantly. They have made its government more responsive without it being oppressive and over-intrusive.

The role of the ruling class must be reduced in the lives of Americans.
